eMachines ET1831-07 Desktop September 6, 2010 Mountain Beaver I purchased this PC at Best Buy for my own use last spring. I like all features and in particular, the price. My sister's PC was 12 years old and she was on dial-up. I showed her what mine was capable of and she decided she wanted one, so I purchased it over Amazon.com. It arrived ahead of schedule and in very good condition. Amazon.com is great. Sis got Broadband and is really excited. She had over six hundred pics on her camera card and I plugged it into the slot on the front of her computer and imported them. She is going crazy with this thing. Very user friendly, fast and so far, reliable. For the price, you can't beat it.
Early review September 3, 2010 S. Phillips I just received this computer three days ago, so this is rather an early review. I just wanted to point out the things I liked and didn't like about it straight out of the box. As for long-term performance, I can't say anything on that yet, but I might come back and edit this review to include some thoughts on that later on.
THE GOOD: When I first took this out of the box, I really liked the look of it. After plugging it in and starting it up, I instantly fell in love with Windows 7 (which I had never used before) and I was pleased that for the most part there wasn't a whole lot of fluff software that I had to uninstall. There is some, but compared to all the fluff they put on my last two computers, this was downright minimal. Also, comparing it to my last computer (which was a netbook), the extra RAM and the large amount of storage space is FANTASTIC. The body of the tower itself is actually pretty sturdy feeling, though as you'll see below, that's not including some points. Also, the proliferation of USB ports is great, and if I were inclined to any kind of expansion, there seems to be plenty of room for doing just that.
THE WHATEVER: The green power light strip doesn't really sway me one way or the other. I think I'd actually like it if it had been blue instead of green, but since it's thankfully not red it doesn't really annoy me. I think if you really hate it, just get some black electrical tape and go over it and that would solve the problem. The keyboard and mouse that it came with are so-so. I dislike the mouse and prefer to use the one that was included with my wacom tablet, but since I don't have an extra keyboard and don't feel like spending the money on it, I'm using the one that came with it. It's not TOO bad; it feels rather cheap and makes a lot of noise, but since it can always be replaced its rather tolerable as a temporary solution.
THE BAD: The DVD/Disk drive. The actual drive is pretty solid, but the eject button DOESN'T WORK. This is because they created some kind of plastic thing that's smooth and pushed in and is SUPPOSED to push in on the actual eject button. However, due to miscalculation or some other kind of error, it doesn't even touch the button at all! If I want to open the drive, I have to lift the drive cover and reach in to push the button manually. This may or may not be super annoying to you, since it depends on how much you'll use the drive, but in my opinion I wish that they had sacrificed the 'smooth' look to the front of the tower and just put in a proper button!
Overall, for the things that you get for this price, I'd say that this is a decent buy. If I had had the money to play around and go for something higher-end, I probably would have. However, for someone with this restricted of a budget, it has all the necessities and more. Might not be super fancy, but it seems like it will get the job done efficiently. I might come back in a few months and let you know the long term performance.
Excellent value desktop September 2, 2010 Jasmol (San Diego, CA United States) Bought this for my retired parents after their 5-year old computer stopped working. Hard to beat for the price. Hardly any bloatware to get rid of which is nice. Attractive case, solid specs for basic computing (web, email, word processing). Could probably handle simple or older games with no problem, but this isn't applicable to my parents. They were especially impressed with how fast the machine booted up and the overall snappiness in general.
A few minor nitpicks; included mouse and keyboard are cheap and PS/2. I prefer USB, though I guess you could argue that PS/2 frees up more USB slots. The DVD drive is oddly recessed a bit behind a plastic door. No DVI output (VGA only). None of these issues are significant to users like my parents.
Powerful but plasticky August 28, 2010 B. Borgerson (Ashland, OR United States) For the price, this machine is amazingly fast and powerful. We put up the "speedometers" in Gadgets, and it's cruising at about 20% of RAM usage at idle. Yes, it is a terabyte disc, so we have over 800 Gigs free. Everything just zips. Downside? Plastic parts on the flimsy side, particularly the optical drive cover. I'm sure the drive would still work if the cover broke off, but it wouldn't look good. Keyboard also on the lightweight side but the feel is just fine. Also, when plugging in the monitor to the VGA connector, I noticed a bit more wiggle than usual, as if the motherboard were not solidly secured to the cabinet. If used by responsible adults, I expect the B- built quality won't be a problem. But not recommended for teenage boys.
Great general purpose, not for serious gamers August 25, 2010 Richard E. Hanson (Mill Creek, WA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Over the years I have bought and built many computers. I am pretty much an Intel/Windows person and of the 5 computers I own, all are Pentiun, Icore, etc. until this one. I was looking for a solid, fast general purpose computer for my granddaughter. I needed something for internet searching, email, word processing, and file & print sharing. I was also looking for something inexpensive. After reading reviews on the eMachine ET1831-05 I was leaning toward it and then I saw an add for a refurb. It arrived yesterday and I set it up today. WOW!!! What a surprise. I never expected this kind of performance from a celeron processor. All my other computers are running Windows 7 Ultimate and this one with the onboard Windows 7 Home Premium just blended right in. It doesn't have the sideboard on this version, but it networked readily into my home group.
The case is a little tinny, and I didn't like having to break out the expansion slot covers to install my Wireless G PCI card. For a built in video card, it gives a clear crisp image at high resolution. I was disappointed it didn't have a digital output, but the VGA works well enough that I didn't need to buy another card at this time. Like I said, it's not intened to be a gamimg machine. It could handle a single PCI Express card, but I think if you wanted all that, you should look into a different computer. It has one EIDE controller, although I don't know why anyone would want to use it. There are 4 SATA ports, 2 available.
One reviewer complained about the included software. Once you accept the fact that these packages come with bottom line or trial software hoping you buy the upgrade, you can quit worrying about it. Except for the desired operating system of course. The first thing I did after intial setup was delete and replace all the software with full versions of MS Office, Norton and Nero. If you can't afford the Office, there are some great free ones available like Open Office. There are other CD/DVD burning programs, I happen to like Nero. Don't chince on security software. It's worth what you pay for it. I happen to prefer Norton which I have used ever since the old DOS 3.1 days. It has never failed me. Some of the others want to to take control of your computer and when it comes to software, I want to control it.
For general purpose office work, this is an exceptional deal and the price is frosting on the cake. I got a refurb even cheaper. In electronics, refurbs can be a really good deal. They've been inspected twice, and all components are new or like new.
