Key Features Big, Beautiful Display Combined with All-In-One Simplicity
The evolution of the Apple iMac. | The new iMac has come a long way from the first 15-inch iMac. The all-in-one design of the first flat-panel iMac cleaned up the desktop, and put everything you need--display, processor, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, memory, and more--inside one simple enclosure. New technology inside and out makes the new iMac a worthy addition to the all-in-one dynasty. This 21.5-inch model features an edge-to-edge glass display that covers nearly the entire front of the enclosure. When all you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what's onscreen. Movies, TV shows, websites, photos--everything looks stunning on the new 16:9 widescreen iMac display. And the LED backlighting in the new iMac helps push more light through the pixels with remarkable brightness and efficiency. And because the LED backlight doesn't take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin--even with all the high-performance components inside. The iMac display is designed to look great from almost any angle. A technology called in-plane switching (IPS) makes this possible. Whether you're sitting in front of the display or standing off to the side, you'll get a perfect picture with superb color consistency and no loss of detail. The wider iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet. While you'll find a collection of ports on the back of iMac, you won't find much else. A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back one continuous aluminum surface. And there's only one cord: the power cord. Wireless Magic Mouse and Keyboard Forget the mouse as you know it. Every iMac comes with the wireless Magic Mouse: the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. Use it once and you'll wonder how you ever used anything else. There's no scroll ball, no clunky wheel, no cord, and no visible button. Instead, the Magic Mouse uses Multi-Touch technology to let you control everything with simple gestures. Give them a try and you'll find that Magic Mouse changes the way you interact with your computer. Built-in software lets you configure Magic Mouse any way you want. Its smooth, seamless design is ambidextrous, and it supports two-button clicking--without buttons. The iMac banishes desktop clutter completely with a wireless keyboard to go with the wireless Magic Mouse. This low-profile keyboard takes up less desk space--24 percent less--than larger keyboards. There's no numeric keypad, so you can place your mouse comfortably next to the keyboard. And built-in Bluetooth means there are no cables to connect. Built-in Wi-Fi High-speed 802.11n wireless technology is built into iMac. And with Time Capsule or the AirPort Express Base Station, every computer in every room can wirelessly connect to iMac, the Internet, and each other. Over this network, everyone can print, surf the web, and play music on iTunes through your home stereo--wirelessly. iSight Webcam Hidden behind the glass display at the top of iMac is an iSight camera. Use it with iChat, and you can be anywhere without actually being there. Video chat with up to three of your friends, share a video with a colleague, or present to a client. Use iSight with Photo Booth for fun photo effects. And there's no need to waste valuable primping time installing software or configuring the camera. Pre-Loaded with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and iLife '09 Every Mac comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the world's most advanced operating system, and iLife, Apple's innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. iLife features iPhoto, to easily organize and manage photos; iMovie with powerful easy-to-use new features such as Precision Editor, video stabilization and advanced drag and drop; and GarageBand which introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar. Installed software
- Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard (includes Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Photo Booth, Front Row, Xcode Developer Tools)

Environmentally Friendly Design Because Apple designs both hardware and software, we can reduce our environmental footprint in ways others can't. For starters, a highly efficient power supply reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your Mac. Unlike a lot of PCs, a Mac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power--even between keystrokes. A Mac also doesn't contain a lot of toxic materials. All Mac displays are mercury and arsenic free, and the internal components are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Efficient Power Supply The iMac includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Advanced Power Management Unlike a lot of Windows-based PC systems, iMac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X spins down hard drives and activates sleep mode on already energy-efficient LED-backlit displays. And it balances tasks across both central processors and graphics processors. Mac OS X never misses a power-saving opportunity, no matter how small. It even regulates the processor between keystrokes, reducing power between the letters you type. That's just one of many ways Apple manages small amounts of power that add up to big savings. ENERGY STAR Qualification The iMac meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, making it ENERGY STAR qualified. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption.

A great computer, but....... July 1, 2010 Alfred T. Miles (Heathsville, VA USA) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
There is no doubt that the iMac is a great computer. I purchased it Feb 2010. The reason I spent considerably more than I would have had I bought another PC was for Apple's reputation for outstanding product quality but mostly for their well deserved reputation for excellent service. So why did I rate it just two stars? Within about two weeks after purchase, the caps lock light on the wireless keyboard stopped working. I could get it working again only by either restarting the computer or restarting the keyboard. Then I could not type a capital O by depressing the shift key. It would work by depressing the caps lock key. That stopped after four or five days. After repeated stoppages of the caps lock light, Apple directed me to return the keyboard for another one, which I did. I had the new keyboard less than a week when that problem started again. Within two weeks, Apple had me replace the keyboard again. In the meantime, I had had four or five instances where the computer just cut off. It would not restart until I unplugged it, plugged it back in. On two occasions the slide show feature of iPhoto quit midway through a slideshow. After enduring all this for two or three weeks, and talking with online support (by this time I had had quite a few conversations with these good people), I took the iMac to the closest Apple store for them to check it out. The unit was ready in two days. They could not find any reason for all my problems so they reloaded the operating system. Everything worked for about five days when the keyboard problem started again. I have talked with Apple since then, as recently as 28 June. I was told to call back and they are going to walk me through completely erasing the computer and reloading everything again from the disks that came with the computer. I haven't done that yet. Yes, the caps light has cut off again, and I restarted it, but everything else is working well. Except that I have had to unplug/plug it in again to get it started at least once. Right now I'm making out with all this, but I will call them soon to do the reloading thing with them. I just don't want to do it right now. BUT, I feel certain that this will do the trick. There obviously is a permanent glitch in my current setup that just reloading the operating program can't resolve. If this latest step doesn't work, I firmly believe that Apple is going to tell me to bring my computer back, they'll give me another one. I have great faith in them. In all fairness, I will update this review as soon as all my problems are resolved.
OK Computing, TERRIBLE Gaming. June 13, 2010 Christopher P. Mason 1 out of 29 found this review helpful
Listen, we gotta set some things straight here. First of all, if your a gamer, i need to ask why you are shopping for a mac. A mac boasts very nice graphics, and i must say, they are impressive. Although appealing and very shiny, macs have more issues than the amount of pennies youll spend buying them.
99% of downloadable online games are only compatible with windows. Nuff said.
Point 1 PC.
Also, the mac overheats and freezes up after extensive use of the high graphics. (extensive meaning just 1 hour) Thats right, I cant even play RUNESCAPE without the nightmarish abomination's browser jamming and being forced to shut down the mac.
Point 2 PC.
I must admit. If your the kind of guy that likes to surf the web, spam messages on myspace, or email, whatever, this is for you. So yea, if you want a family computer, go ahead. Get it.
Point 1 mac
The macs just dont cut it. Its pretty much a white PC with better virus protection and all white. When you get down to it, macs rip you off in the end because, without amazons great deals, they cost hundreds more than alienware desktops (and may i add, alienware desktops are far better for gaming than macs) What would be really nice is if they came in different colors, but PCs dont do that either so...
Point 3 PC.
When my dad bought this stupid machine for me, i was depressed for awhile. Its the mouse. Mouse sucks, takes months to get used to.
Point 4 PC
Keyboard is too hard to type. Cant press ENTER without hitting the \ key or shift. Ive already made 29 spelling errors in this review because of it.
Point 5 PC
Macs have nice virus protection. Unless your a download maniac that clicks on every advertisement he sees, Macs wont do much. Still, its nice not to do constant virus scans on AVG.
Point 2 Mac
Commercials fail. they try to chop down PCs by making PC the nerd. In reality, if you spend [...] bucks on a mac, your a nerd with issues.
Point 6 PC
Chuck norris has a PC. 43 In fact.
Point 62998 PC
In the end, PC beats mac 62998 to 2. Good Fight.
POOR AVCHD / BLURAY SUPPORT June 6, 2010 kev6677 (NEW YORK) 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
Unbelivable that macs do not support AVCHD or bluray nativelly .Anyone who has bought an HD camcorder in the last 3 years will be frustrated trying to use a mac to edit there high definition videos. APPLE's solution is either to use there own codec which either creates very poor quality videos almost like standard definition video or creating huge files 5 times the size of your original. How ironic a georgeous 21.5' 1080p display but you cannot watch a bluray disk instead you must buy your movies from the apple store or spend hundreds more on software and bluray drives, what a shame. Even worst is that they deliberately cripple there dvd drives using some feature called Riplock that slows the drive to a crawl if you wish to backup your dvd collection. I guess it's back to windows untill Apple solves these problems
My Very First iMac May 12, 2010 Tiffany (California) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've been a PC user for 15 years. I was always reluctant to make the switch because I was scared I wouldn't be able to play my games.
Parallels, Bootcamp, & other programs make this possible & the games run smoother & SO MUCH better than any PC I've ever had.
This computer handles anything & everything I throw it at. I've played StarCraft 2 with Photoshop running in the background (I didn't realize it was) & the fan didn't even make a peep. Sure my monitor was super warm, but it didn't whine or make any atrocious noises I was so used to with the PC.
The screen is just absolutely gorgeous & it is so incredibly easy to setup. I love that I only had to plug in the power cord & that was it.
There are so many apps on the iMac that make life so much easier & wonderful. Quicksilver, for example, is the best application launcher & so powerful. Everyday when I come home, I am just so happy that I get to play around with my iMac instead of hoping that it won't blue screen on me when I try to shut it down. It is truly a pleasure to work on the iMac. I've stayed up later than usual just because I want to do things on my iMac even though I have an exam the next morning.
It is the perfect computer for most people (as most people aren't pro-gamers). It runs any Windows OS better than any PC & it is the fastest computer I've ever worked on. Photoshop loads in 3-4 seconds & nothing is a pain to open/close besides Word, which isn't the iMac's fault. Pages is extremely fast to load though. The OS X uses the processor so efficiently that a quadcore is a bit excess for the average user. Best of all, if you think you need something faster, the iMac naturally holds its value better than any PC.
I NOW understand why people are such Apple extremists; the computers are just absolutely amazing. I honestly had no idea how great they were. I was never a huge PC fan, but I didn't think much of Macs either. I wish SOMEONE..ANYONE tried to convert me last year when I bought a laptop. I will never go back to a PC. There is no way you could get me to use one of those crappy Sony all-in-ones (seriously, what a joke) or the HP TouchSmart (it is so slow). This iMac handles & it is just so thin.
It wakes up from sleep mode super fast, it shuts down fast, it starts up fast. Everything is so fast. If you're a PC user who is thinking of converting, DO IT, MAKE THE SWITCH. It is not hard to get used to at all. It should take you a day or two to really get used to. All the shortcuts are pretty much the same, you just have to switch from control to command.
Things are easy to move around, rename, & the iMac reads almost any type of file. I had a bunch of PSD files & there were thumbnails of all the PSDs when I didn't even have Photoshop installed!
All the apps available for the iMac are 10 times faster than any PC software I've ever used. Cyberduck, Transmit, Transmission, Pages, iChat, Mail, etc..they all do their jobs so efficiently, smoothly, & in record time. I've had Outlook on my PC & let me just tell you, Mail (on the iMac) connected to my server & gmail in 5 seconds. It took forever for me to configure out my settings in Outlook.
The iMac is simplified, fast, advanced when it needs to be, efficient, & amazing. Even if you get that yellow tinge, screen flickering, whistling when you turn the brightness down..you can replace your iMac (if you buy it from Apple) & you could go through 5 of them, but you know that the computer is worth the hassle..because once you've gone Mac, you honestly will never go back.
Convert if you haven't already!!

Bought this to replace my aging eMac. Love the big, bright, super colorful display that rivals my HDTV. Also love the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. I'm no geek and this computer is way beyond my capabilities, let alone needs, but the stiff price was worth it to me to not have to put up with a Windows PC.
